Read All About it

I added a tea stained background to the pumpkins, I darkened it and changed the hue/saturation to make it more of a red/orange colour to the original brown colour that it was. I thought these colours would really fit in with the theme of the image as pumpkins are used for Halloween and Halloween is usually a dark and eerie night. This is my final image for the pumpkin article, I think there is more I could of possibly of done to it as the pumpkin in the middle doesn't look quite right but it was meant to stand out more than the other two which I think I achieved.
This is how the image looked after my first go at editing it. Because the original image was on watercolour paper, you could see the texture on the paper from the scanned in version so I went around the whole image and took it all and made the background just plain white. I didn't like it like this and planned on adding some sort of background. I personally think the pumpkins look a lot better darker and more vibrant.
This was the my first coloured image for the pumpkin article, I produced this using watercolours. This was how it looked just from scanning it into the computer. I actually thought the image looked better in real life than scanned in but wanted to edit it anyway to make it darker, and make the colours more vibrant.
In the end this was the idea I liked the most and thought I would go for, unfortunately, I didn't know if it was what my art director was looking for as they went home. In the end I decided to go home and go back to my original article and create an image for the pumpkin article.
These were my initial ideas for the Tulisa article that I had to look at. I couldn't really think of ideas very easily as I wasnt interested in the subject even slightly. It really wasn't something I enjoyed, and I didn't really get much art direction either. I pretty much had to think up the whole thing myself. Because of this I didn't know what the 'art director' was looking for, which meant I literally had to just come up with as much as I could in the hope they would like something.
This is the article that I was given by my 'director'. This article didn't interest me at all which made it difficult for me to produce any ideas for it and I found it very hard to concentrate on the research.
When we then got told that we had to swop with someone else and we had to illustrate their article instead I was a bit worried as I was happy with the idea I came up with my article and how I was going to approach it.
After going through the brief I wasn't sure what kind of story I was looking for in the newspapers. Originally I came across one about floods which I found interested but as there was already images for the article I carried on searching. I found a small article about pumpkins, and how the price of them will probably have to be put up this year as the weather has been so bad. I actually found the article really interesting, I was excited to illustrate the story.

Sharing The Bill

This brief reminded me of an artist I've always had a love for. I actually thought she would fit quite well  with the theme. Sarah-Jane Szikora is an artist, currently living and working in North Shields, UK. The main subjects of her work are outrageously exaggerated figures and animals, naughty food and gingerbread men. As I have a huge love for baking, the idea of using this in my artwork excited me and gave me whole new ideas and directions for this brief.
This is my Sharing the Bill final piece. I think it works well because you can really tell that the girl is the odd one out of the group. I think small elements like the purse with the moths flying out shows that I read the text and took it in by including small details like this.
Like many I'm sure, one of the first things that came to mind with this brief was the Mad Hatter's tea party from Alice in Wonderland, as it is possibly the most famous tea party in literature.

Fernando Falcone created his own version of the Alice in Wonderland Tea Party, looking at his work lead me to come across another piece of his work where he has skeletons around a table, this really interested me, and I wanted to try and create something similar to see if it worked for this brief.
Because my first thumbnails weren't very focused they were just simple layout ideas, I wrote down a few more ideas.

[Insert observational drawings]

Because I was unable to concentrate at the time, I took a few photos to be able to work from at a later date and to also have references of people generally sitting at tables and socialising.

I took my sketchbook and pencils down to the nearest Starbucks to try and do some observational drawing of people sitting at tables, unfortunately, I found it very hard to concentrate and found that people would look at me. Because of this I decided to draw simple table objects instead.
After analysing the text, I did a few thumbnails of my initials thoughts so I had some sort of idea what I was trying to achieve for my final image.
[insert thumbnail images]
The first thing I did when we were given this brief was to read through the piece of text and pick out anything interesting. Also, anything that I could easily show within an image. For example, Little Miss Moth-Wallet. I used a dictionary and thesaurus to look up some of the words to get a better understanding of them.
